October: Shibori
Shibori - coming from the Japanese word “shiboru” (meaning to wring or squeeze) is a resist or “tie-dyeing” technique that was first introduced in Japan in the 8 th Century.
Unlike the tie-dyed textiles that became popular in the US during the 1960s, Shibori artisans use fine threads to wrap and isolate small sections of fabric, creating a series of
intricately defined, repetitive textural patterns across the surface of the finished textile. The traditional form of this extremely labor-intensive technique is based on the
countless ways thread can be used to bind, stitch, twist, and fold fabric before and during the dyeing process. Although the patterns are highly organized and elaborate,
the finest examples of Shibori are valued for their uniqueness and eye-catching beauty as well as their exceptional expression of Wabi Sabi - the Japanese aesthetic
philosophy of beauty in imperfection.
