November: Hand Painted Textile

Dating back at least 5500 years, hand-painted textiles have a long history. The earliest known techniques involved resist-dyeing methods, direct painting, and block-printed fabrics found in India and China. Like most early decorative textile techniques, the art of applying paint to fabric was carried along the trade routes throughout Asia and Europe by travelers with an eye for color, pattern, and unique textile arts.

More recently, hand-painted textiles have gained significant recognition in the fashion industry, allowing artists and printer-makers to use upcycled jackets, shirts, and other clothing items to create original artistic statements.
